Buyer Guides / Pricing / Reviews & More

Discover the complete guide to buying a Jeep Wrangler in 2024. Reviews, pricing details, and a buyer's guide. If you’re in the market for a current-gen Wrangler JL, you’ll have to consider which trim level is right for you or, more specifically, which best suits your needs…and budget. In this guide, our experts provide a crash course on Jeep Wrangler trim levels.

2024 Jeep Wrangler Buyer's Guide

Classic American off-roader can be dressed for the mall or outfitted to climb over rocks. Have it your way.

Summary & Updates

The Wrangler is Jeep’s iconic body-on-frame SUV. It descends from the original CJ line. The latest “JL” generation debuted for the 2018 model year and was refreshed for the 2024 model year. The Wrangler is the most off-road capable SUV in Jeep’s lineup. Its capability and ample charm have outweighed concerns about driving dynamics. The Wrangler’s resale value is among the best in the U.S. It has a new rival in the Ford Bronco.

Jeep offers two Wrangler body styles: the two-door and four-door “Unlimited” model — now preferred by about 90% of buyers. You can buy a Wrangler with four and six-cylinder gas engines, a four-cylinder 4xe plug-in hybrid or a Hemi V8 in the Wrangler 392. The 3.6-liter V6 gas Wrangler can come with a manual transmission. All other Wranglers have an eight-speed automatic.

Overall, while the Wrangler remains a beloved icon for its off-road capabilities and customizable nature, it does come with certain trade-offs, such as less refined on-road dynamics and higher fuel consumption, especially in the more powerful variants. The addition of modern technology, like the new 12.3-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5, enhances the driving experience, but some reviewers, like those on Autoblog, still caution that the Wrangler's handling and ride comfort are not on par with more road-focused SUVs. The choice among the variants largely depends on what balance of off-road capability, fuel efficiency, and on-road comfort a buyer is looking for.

2024 Wrangler Review

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler has garnered attention across various reviews for its blend of traditional ruggedness and modern upgrades. Reviewers have highlighted specific variants like the Rubicon 392, Rubicon 4xe, and Willys, each offering unique features and performance characteristics.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is praised for its powerful 6.4-liter V8 engine, delivering 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. This engine propels the Rubicon 392 from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, making it a standout for its speed and off-road capability. However, its fuel efficiency is notably lower, with estimates of 13 mpg city and 16 mpg highway. The Rubicon 392 comes with standard 35-inch tires and an upgraded suspension system, which enhances its off-road prowess but compromises ride comfort and fuel economy on pavement. A review from Team-BHP highlights the Rubicon 392 as "one of the best offroaders on the planet" but notes that it has a "1-star Euro-NCAP safety rating," which could be a concern for safety-conscious buyers.

The Wrangler 4xe, Jeep's plug-in hybrid variant, combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor, offering a total output of 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. This setup provides an all-electric range of 22 miles, with a combined fuel economy of 49 MPGe. It's particularly well-suited for those with short commutes who can take advantage of its electric-only capabilities. Reviews, such as those from GearJunkie, emphasize the 4xe's potential for combining off-road capability with environmentally friendly technology, though it doesn't quite match the visceral thrill of the V8 in the Rubicon 392.

For a more traditional yet capable choice, the 2024 Jeep Wrangler Willys edition offers a balance between cost and off-road readiness. It includes features like 33-inch all-terrain tires, high-clearance fender flares, and a rear-locking differential, making it a strong contender for off-road enthusiasts who might not need the extreme capabilities of the Rubicon. According to a review on GearJunkie, the Willys is noted for its "off-road goodies" and affordability, starting at around $40k.

What's the best new Jeep Wrangler for you?

The base Sport trim level caters to off-road purists on a budget while the top-spec Rubicon 392 is built for speed freaks (across all terrain types). The spread of prices makes this a hard choice because we like the ideas of a bare-bones, basic Sport at just over $30k, which feels like a total bargain, but having driven a loaded Rubicon 392 with that insane pull and grunt for almost 3x the price, it is a harder choice than it seems. So we will split the difference. Get yourself a $45k Rubicon.

Current Jeep Wrangler Trim Levels Explained

So, what are trim levels anyway? This term describes the pre-packaged option groups selected by a vehicle’s manufacturer. You can essentially think of trim levels as a collection of features and accessories, where price increases proportionally alongside the feature count; in Layman’s terms, lower-spec’d trim levels have the lowest price tags and higher-spec’d trim levels have the highest. Trim levels may impact several variables, including overall power and efficiency, drivetrain configuration, body configuration, off-road handling characteristics, interior luxury, and aesthetics. Trim levels personalize a Jeep to a buyer’s needs and preferences. While some Jeep owners may prioritize off-road performance, others emphasize comfort and luxury. To satisfy both consumers, manufacturers develop trim levels offering various features and price points!
