1999 model year

REAR SEAT BELTS
Recall Date: 11/09/1998

Owner notification start date: N/ADefect: The rear outboard seat belt retractor spring can disengage from the rewind mechanism, disabling the retractor function, and preventing the belt from fitting snugly around the occupant.

Consequence: In the event of a crash, the occupant may not be properly restrained, increasing the risk of personal injury.

Solution: Dealers will replace these retractors.

SEAT BELT TOP MOUNTING BOLTS

Owner notification start date: N/ADefect: The seat belt shoulder height Adjustable Turning Loop (ATL) top mounting bolt was inadequately manufactured.

Consequence: The affected mounting bolts may not withstand sufficient force to function properly in certain impact situations, increasing the risk of injury to a belted occupant.

Solution: Dealers will replace the shoulder belt height adjuster mounting bolts.

Emissions Recall No. 882 – REPROGRAM PCM: OBD READINESS CODES

Manufactured: Up through April 3, 2000.

Owner notification start date: 2/18/2000Defect: Reprogram PCM – OBD Readiness Codes. The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system on about 500,000 of the above vehicles may not reset readiness codes, as required by Federal and California regulations, when a generic scan tool is used.

Solution: The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) must be reprogrammed (flashed).

SEAT BELT RETRACTORS

Owner notification start date: August 20, 2001Defect: Failure to comply with requirements of FMVSS No. 209, “Seat belt assemblies.” The front seat belt retractor may not comply with the requirements of the standard.

Consequence: If the retractor does not work properly, it will not adequately protect occupants in the event of a crash.

Solution: Dealers will replace the seat belt retractor.

Recall No. B06 – MANIFOLD DEBRI ACCUMULATION

Owner notification start date: May, 2002Defect: Sport utility vehicles equipped with a 4.0L engine only, built through March 5, 2002. The design of the intake and exhaust manifolds could allow debris to accumulate at the #3 cylinder location.

Consequence: This could result in a vehicle fire.

Solution: Dealers will install a manifold shield to modify the air flow characteristics and to prevent the accumulation of debris in the area of the #3 cylinder.

STEERING GEAR
Recall Date: 11/08/1999

Owner notification start date: N/ADefect: Some steering gear units were assembled with internal end-of-travel-stops that missed the heat treat process, resulting in soft internal travel stops.

Consequence: This could result in sticking, binding, or seizing of the steering gear.

Solution: Dealers will replace the steering gear on involved vehicles.

FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG
Recall Date: 12/07/1999

Owner notification start date: N/ADefect: The passenger air bag inflator assembly contains an incorrect inflator charge amount.

Consequence: This condition could increase the risk of a passenger occupant injury under certain accident conditions

Solution: Dealers will replace the air bag module with a correct module.

FUEL TANK VENT TUBE WELDS

Owner notification start date: N/ADefect: Some of these vehicles may have been built with fuel tanks with suspect vent tube welds.

Consequence: Separation of the vent tube weld could result in a fuel leak. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.

Solution: Dealers will replace any fuel tanks built in the suspect time period. The vehicle will be inspected and if the bar code on the fuel tank indicates that the tank was built during the suspect period, it will be replaced.

Emissions Recall No. 8591/8592 – REPROGRAM PCM: CATALYST MONITOR

Potential number of units affected: 300,000 (including other DCX vehicles)

Owner notification start date: 3/15/2000Defect: Due to a software error, the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) catalyst monitor will not run.

Solution: Remedy: Daimler/Chrysler will conduct a recall of the affected vehicles to install (reflash) a calibration in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to enable the catalyst monitor.

Recall No. F25 – ELECTRIC RADIATOR FAN

Manufactured: All 2000 model year vehicles built from January 31, 2000 through June 12, 2000 and all 2002 model year vehicles with a 4.0L engine built from February 4, 2002 through June 17, 2002.
Owner notification start date: August 2006Defect: The plastic fan blades of the electric radiator fan on about 182,800 of the above vehicles may fracture and separate. This can damage the radiator and/or cause the engine to overheat. If a fan blade separates while the hood is open, those nearby could become injured.

Solution: The electric radiator fan must be replaced.

Warranty Bulletins

Warranty Bulletin D-03-23WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR LIGHT BULBS AND LAMPS

Issue Date: October, 2003

Purpose: To clarify the Basic Limited Warranty coverage on Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles for light bulbs and lamps.

Model year(s): 1999-2004

Action: Based upon a Dealer Council request in September, an explanation of bulb and lamp coverage is listed below.

Bulbs are not covered by the vehicle warranty. However, to increase customer satisfaction, we have made a system adjustment to allow dealership warranty claim payment up to 12 months or 12, 000 miles even though bulbs are listed, as “Maintenance Costs Not Covered” in the Warranty Information glove box booklet, Section 3.3.

Malfunction Indicator Lamps (MIL) are covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles on all cars and trucks with the exception of 2004 Crossfire, which is covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles and 2002-2004 Sprinter, which is covered for 5 years or 100,000 miles.

Lamps are covered for the Basic Limited Warranty for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Additional Information: A bulb or light bulb is a device that produces light through electrical energy by heating a filament. A lamp or housing is a fixture, such as a tail lamp, side marker lamp, headlamp housing or a high intensity discharge lamp (HID) where the light emitting bulb and lamp/housing are an assembly.

To verify exact bulb/lamp coverage for a specific vehicle, run a DealerCONNECT VIP inquiry with the vehicle’s current mileage and enter the 8 digit Labor Operation for the bulb/lamp in question. Hit the “View” key and then select the “LOP COV” tab to see if the bulb/lamp is covered.

Warranty Action D-00-16INSTALLING AFTERMARKET ENGINE PERFORMANCE ENHANCING MODIFICATION PACKAGES OR COMPONENTS

Issue Date: October, 2000

Model year(s): 1999-2004

Discussion: This bulletin is intended to clarify DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation’s warranty coverage policy on vehicles equipped with after-market engine performance enhancing modification packages or components. Although this applies to all vehicles, Dodge Ram Pickup trucks equipped with the Cummins diesel engine are particularly susceptible to performance enhancing kits.

Section 3.7 of the Dodge Ram Pickup warranty Information booklet states “Your warranties don’t cover the costs of repairing damage or conditions caused by . . . any changes made to your truck that don’t comply with DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation or DaimlerChrysler Corporation specifications.” This section also states that warranties do not cover “tampering with the emission systems, or with a part that could affect the emission systems”.

Unless certified, engine performance modification components violate both statements under the warranty terms. Therefore, prior to beginning repairs to any vehicle equipped, or suspected of being equipped with a performance enhancing modification, it is important to determine whether the needed repairs are a direct result of the kit. If so, they are the customer’s responsibility. Keep in mind that the performance modifications may cause damage to non-engine components, such as transmissions, axles, electrical components, etc. Claims submitted for repairs not covered by the warranty are subject to chargeback.

Also remember that dealership installation of such modification components or packages at any time, as well as the sale of vehicles modified with such components before delivery, may violate state and/or Federal emission regulations that carry substantial fines.
