2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Revives Trailhawk and Overland Models

Jeep reintroduces iconic Trailhawk and Overland in 2027 Grand Cherokee lineup

Jeep has officially announced the return of two of the most recognizable names in the Grand Cherokee lineup for the 2027 model year: the Trailhawk and Overland. The move marks a significant shift in the brand’s strategy as it seeks to reinforce the Grand Cherokee’s position in the highly competitive midsize SUV segment while reconnecting with the off-road heritage that helped define the nameplate.

The revival comes after a period of uncertainty surrounding Jeep’s electrification plans. Earlier this year, parent company Stellantis discontinued its plug-in hybrid offerings across several brands, resulting in the temporary disappearance of the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, which had been offered exclusively with the 4xe powertrain. For 2027, Jeep is bringing the model back with a conventional gasoline-powered setup, signaling a renewed emphasis on capability and customer demand.

At the center of the revived Trailhawk is Stellantis’ turbocharged 2.0-liter Hurricane four-cylinder engine, producing 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain delivers substantially more output than the long-serving Pentastar V6 while maintaining the off-road credentials expected from the Trailhawk badge. Jeep has equipped the SUV with the Quadra-Trac II four-wheel-drive system, a two-speed transfer case, electronic limited-slip rear differential, all-terrain tires, and the Quadra-Lift air suspension system. Ground clearance reaches 11.4 inches, reinforcing its position as the most capable Grand Cherokee in the lineup.

Alongside the Trailhawk, Jeep is also reviving the Overland trim. Traditionally positioned between rugged capability and premium luxury, the Overland returns with upscale appointments including Nappa leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, distinctive exterior styling elements, and larger wheel options. The model continues to target buyers seeking long-distance comfort without sacrificing all-weather and light off-road performance.

The timing of these revivals is particularly noteworthy. Industry reports indicate that Jeep is preparing a next-generation Grand Cherokee program for 2027, while Stellantis is simultaneously investing heavily in product development as part of a broader global turnaround strategy. Reintroducing established trims allows Jeep to strengthen the current Grand Cherokee portfolio while maintaining consumer interest ahead of future model launches.

For enthusiasts and longtime Jeep customers, the return of the Trailhawk and Overland represents more than just additional trim levels. It reflects a renewed focus on the attributes that have historically driven Grand Cherokee sales: authentic off-road capability, premium comfort, and versatility. With both models expected to arrive in dealerships by late 2026, the 2027 Grand Cherokee lineup appears poised to offer a more balanced mix of adventure-ready performance and upscale refinement than it has in recent years.
