Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Prototype Signals a High-Performance Return

Could this be the next Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT?

Jeep appears to be quietly exploring the possibility of reviving the high-performance Grand Cherokee SRT, although Stellantis has yet to officially confirm the program. A powertrain prototype recently examined by The Fast Lane Car provides some of the strongest clues yet, with the test vehicle visibly carrying SRT badging while being described officially as a powertrain development mule.

At its core is Stellantis’ 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six in high-output specification rather than the Grand Cherokee’s four-cylinder or Pentastar V6 configurations. In the Ram lineup, this version produces as much as 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque. However, the Grand Cherokee prototype incorporates additional engine modifications that reportedly increase output by roughly 90 horsepower over the baseline configuration.

One of the most significant technologies is an eBoost Air system, which uses a 48-volt electrical architecture to drive an electric turbine positioned within the intake tract. Its purpose is to build airflow and positive pressure before the conventional turbochargers reach operating speed, effectively addressing the turbo lag typically associated with larger, higher-output turbochargers. The system incorporates an electric compressor, bypass valve and energy-storage hardware working together to deliver more immediate throttle response.

The prototype itself is unmistakably experimental. Its unconventional hood vent, oversized 295-section tires at both axles, aggressive braking hardware and other non-production components emphasize its development status. Engineers also appear to have utilized components from other Stellantis performance vehicles, potentially including brakes, as part of the test program.

Despite its relatively understated appearance, the prototype exhibits several characteristics associated with previous SRT Grand Cherokees, including substantial wheels, tires, brakes and a more aggressive exhaust character. A future production model would likely require more distinctive exterior treatment to clearly differentiate it from standard Grand Cherokee variants.

Importantly, Stellantis’ broader product strategy has already indicated that additional performance vehicles are planned. The Grand Cherokee is among the models associated with SRT development, making a future high-performance version highly plausible.

Whether the eventual SRT returns with a V8 remains uncertain. For now, this Hurricane-powered prototype suggests Jeep may be pursuing a modern performance formula centered on high-output turbocharging, electrified response technology and significantly enhanced engine hardware rather than simply resurrecting the traditional V8 recipe.
