First Grand Cherokee 4xe

The all-new 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe is the first Grand Cherokee to have a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. The introduction of this model shows the continued growth of the Jeep brand’s pledge to the “zero emission freedom” mission. As Jeep celebrates their 80 years of achievements, innovations, and insights; the new model is another testament to their dedication to the future of mobility.

The 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle technology adds to the fun, adventure, and freedom that the Jeep brand is famous for. And it also brings unparalleled fuel economy, performance, and environmental friendliness:

  • It aims to give an estimated 25 miles or 40 kilometers of all-electric range as well as 57 mpge
  • 375 hp and 637Nm (470 lb.-ft.) torque
  • Quadra Trac II 4×4 system with two-speed transfer case and 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio
  • 47.4:1 crawl ratio
  • 2,720 kg (6,000 lbs) 4xe max towing capability

Meunier added, “The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe driver can tailor its hybrid powertrain to suit each trip, from daily commuting in pure-electric mode to extended road trips with no range anxiety, allowing owners to explore nature off-road in near silence. This is another important step toward achieving our global vision of zero emission freedom. By 2025 we plan to offer a fully electric Jeep vehicle in every SUV segment.”

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available in Grand Cherokee Limited, Overland, Trailhawk, Summit, and Summit Reserve. The propulsion system of the 4xe brings together two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission to give the optimum capability and efficiency.

The 4xe system can produce 375 hp (280 kW) and 637 Nm (470 lb.-ft.) of torque. The target estimate of the Grand Cherokee 4xe of 25 miles or 40 km of all-electric range, gives roughly 57 mpge, with an estimated total range of more than 440 miles or 708 km.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine is fuel-efficient and is part of the Stellantis Global Medium Engine family. The direct-injection engine utilizes a twin-scroll, low-inertia turbocharger that is directly mounted to the cylinder head. Efficiency is enhanced and the load of the engine is relieved by using electric power steering and an electrically driven air conditioning compressor.

A high-voltage, liquid-cooled motor generator unit replaced the typical alternator. The motor generator is connected to the engine crankshaft through a belt, and it spins the engine for an almost seamless, fuel-efficient, start-stop operation, and produces electricity for the battery pack.

The transmission is mounted with a larger high-voltage motor generator, replacing the torque converter. Two clutches are used to manage the torque and power from the e-motor and engine.

Between the engine and the motor is a clutch. The clutch is open when the system is operating in electric-only mode so that there is no mechanical linkage between the e-motor and the engine. When it is closed, the e-motor and 2.0-liter engine’s combined torque flows through the automatic transmission. Behind the e-motor is a variable clutch that manages the engagement with the transmission to enhance drivability and efficiency.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has a 400-volt, 17kWh EV battery. Under the vehicle, the battery units and controls are mounted, placed under the floor, and mounted under the body with a series of skid plates for protection.

To keep the battery at its optimum temperature so it can give its best performance, the battery pack system comes with a dedicated heating and cooling circuit. It also comes with a dedicated heater unit and chiller that utilizes the air-conditioning refrigerant of the Grand Cherokee to lessen coolant temperature when required.

An Integrated Dual Charging Module (ICDM) is also in the 4xe system of the Grand Cherokee, and it combines a DC/DC converter and a battery charger into one, compact unit, and the Power Inverter Module (PIM) was made physically smaller. They are mounted under the body of the SUV with steel shields for protection.

All the high-voltage electronics are sealed shut and waterproofed. The Trail Rated Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe can go through water up to 24 inches or 61 cm.

The charge port is under a push-open/push-close cover on the left front wheel arch for easier nose-in parking at charging locations. To immediately know charging status, the charge port has an LED indicator. There is also an LED battery level monitor on top of the instrument panel to easily see the battery level at a glance while it is charging.

4xe E Selec Modes

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe can tailor the hybrid powertrain to what will best match the trip using the E Selec modes. The driver can choose between commuting, off-roading, or long-distance travel.

Buttons mounted on the instrument panel, left of the steering wheel, allows the driver to select the desired powertrain mode.

  • Hybrid: Blends torque from the petrol engine and electric motor. The powertrain will maximize battery and engine power to give the best combination of fuel efficiency and performance.
  • Electric: Operates completely on zero-emission electric power until the battery reaches minimum charge or until the driver requests more torque (like a wide-open throttle) and it will then engage the engine.
  • eSave: Prioritizes the use of the engine and saves battery charge. There is also an option of Battery Save and Battery Charge during eSave through the Hybrid Electric Pages in the Uconnect 5 system.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe will automatically operate as a hybrid once the battery nears its minimum state of charge, no matter the type of mode previously selected.

Eco Coaching Pages are also included in the driver information display and the main touchscreen. The Eco Coaching Pages allows the owners to keep track of their power flow as well as see the impact of regenerative braking. It also allows the driver to schedule charging times to take advantage of times when the electricity rates are lower. They can also check their driving history as well as get detailed information regarding their electric and petrol use.

The 4xe system also has regenerative braking. When the driver steps on the brake pedal, the maximum available regenerative braking, which is 0.25 g, is engaged by the powertrain control from the electric motors to help slow the vehicle, aided by the traditional friction brakes on the Grand Cherokee.

With 4×4 engaged, all the four wheels feed torque for regenerative braking, optimizing energy recovery. Electricity from regenerative braking is sent to the battery pack to keep or increase the state of charge.

A Max Regen feature can also be selected by the driver to have a more assertive regenerative braking calibration when the SUV detects zero throttle input from the driver or when it is coasting. The Grand Cherokee 4xe can be slowed down faster using Max Regen compared to the standard regenerative braking, allowing it to create more electricity for the battery pack.

Legendary Jeep 4×4 Capability

The driving capability and composed on-road driving dynamics of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is unmatched. Three 4×4 systems gives the SUV its legendary off-road capability, namely the Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited slip-differential (eLSD). All three systems have an active transfer case to improve traction by shifting torque to the wheel with the most grip.

The Jeep Quadra-Lift™ air suspension is class-exclusive, and it is now capable of electronic semi-active damping. It can deliver an impressive 11.3 inches (28.7 cm) of ground clearance as well as 24 inches (61 cm) of water fording. For better comfort, control, and stability, the system automatically adjusts the shock tuning when it senses changing road conditions. It can also be manually controlled through the console controls. It has five height settings to give the best ride performance.

The class-leading Selec-Terrain™ traction management system gives the drivers the choice for on or off-road setting to give the best 4×4 performance. The feature electronically coordinates between braking and handling, 4×4 torque split, throttle control, steering and suspension systems, transfer case, transmission shift, stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and steering feel.

There are five available terrain modes in the Selec-Terrain system namely Auto, Sport, Snow, Rock, Mud/Sand and it gives optimized calibrations for any driving scenario.

The front axle disconnect is new for the 2022 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee 4×4. The front-axle automatically disconnects when the vehicle senses that the road conditions does not really need an all-wheel drive. It automatically shifts the Grand Cherokee into a two-wheel drive, improving fuel economy and lessening the drag on the driveline. When the vehicle senses the need, it will automatically re-engage the four-wheel drive.

The 5.7-liter V8 engine of the Grand Cherokee has a class-leading 7,200 lbs (3,265 kg) max towing.

Award-winning powertrains

Aside from the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe’s innovative plug-in hybrid electric powertrain, the 2022 Grand Cherokee lineup gives buyers the choice between two powerful, refined, and fuel-efficient engines that has proven their optimum performance in any driving situation.

The all-aluminum 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine comes as standard, and it is rated at 293hp and 352Nm (260 lb.-ft.) of torque. It is hailed for both its power and refinement. The 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks of the Pentastar V6 allows it to run smoothly, and this is improved by the accessories that bolt directly to the engine block.

The chain-driven dual overhead camshafts have a variable-valve timing (VVT) and two-step variable valve lift. The combination adjusts the engine output to give the best combination between performance and fuel economy based on the demands of the driver.

The Pentastar V6 comes with the fuel-saving engine start-stop (ESS) technology as standard, and it has been refined and upgraded for the Grand Cherokee. Upgrades include the addition of the pressure reserve element in the eight-speed transmission. It allows for a quick launch as it gives dedicated transmission fluid to the shift elements at engine restart. Early engine restarts coming from the driver’s foot on the brake pedal are minimized due to the refined powertrain controls and new starter technology. The revised controls and switchblade engine mounts also reduced the restart noise, vibration, and harshness.

The towing capacity rating of the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine is up to 6,200 pounds or 2,812 kg. It also has a class-leading driving range of more than 500 miles.

The Grand Cherokee V8 engine has a cylinder shut-off technology. During light acceleration or when cruising on the highway, it deactivates four cylinders. Compared to the previous generations, the system is active in an expanded region, so it is not noticeable to the driver. For acceleration and heavy loads, it gives V8 power, and when the torque requirement is less than the maximum available from the four cylinders, it switches to four-cylinder operation automatically. The cylinder shutoff can improve fuel economy from five to twenty percent depending on the driving scenario.

The VVT technology also adds to the fuel economy by minimizing the engine’s pumping work by delaying the closing of the intake valve, so that the expansion process of the combustion event is increased. This transfers more energy to the wheels instead of it simply being lost out of the exhaust as heat. The VVT also enhances the engine breathing, and in turn, it improves the engine power and efficiency.

Each engine is connected to the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, enhancing fuel economy while giving crisp and smooth gear changes. The gear ratios are widespread to help keep the engine rpm in the perfect range for the task at hand, be it exploring off-road trails or simply cruising on the highway. Shift-map changing gives the transmission the capability to adjust its shift strategy quickly to match the driver’s demands based on the inputs like hill detection, engine torque changes, temperature and longitudinal and lateral acceleration.

The front-axle disconnect is another new upgrade for the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4×4. The front-axle disconnect automatically places the Grand Cherokee in two-wheel drive when the vehicle senses that that the current road condition does not need an all-wheel drive. This minimizes the drag on the driveline and also adds to the fuel economy of the SUV. When the vehicle senses the need, the four-wheel drive is automatically re-engaged.

All-new flexible architecture

The all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has an all-new architecture which was created specifically for the fifth generation Grand Cherokee. It is a flexible architecture engineered specifically for three and two-rows and for the electrified 4xe capability.

The Grand Cherokee has a new unibody construction and chassis that smoothens the electrification. Both the two-row Grand Cherokee and the three-row Grand Cherokee L have the same overall width of 84.6 inches or 215 cm. The two-row Grand Cherokee has a wheelbase which is five inches or 12.7 cm shorter with 116.7 inches or 296.4 cm compared to the 121.7-inch or 309 cm wheelbase of the Grand Cherokee L.

In terms of overall length, the two-row is also shorter at 193.5 inches or 491 cm compared to the 204.9 inches or 520.4 cm of the Grand Cherokee L., so the two models have an 11.4-inch or 28.9 cm difference. Sans a third row, the fifth generation two-row package size was enhanced to support 4xe electrification and Jeep capability without any customer compromise.

The most capable 4×4 Grand Cherokee is the two-row Grand Cherokee which is the second vehicle in the family of Jeep SUVs that will be using the new architecture, following the first three-row Grand Cherokee L which was launched early in the year. By early 2022, they will begin the third and final phase with the launch of the first electrified Grand Cherokee 4xe in North America, and it will eventually be released to the global markets later in the year.
