It is a purpose-built Ultra4-inspired machine engineered from the ground up, where virtually every component was designed, fabricated, and tested to deliver exceptional performance without sacrificing serviceability or timeless styling.

A Classic Body Wrapped Around a Bespoke Chassis

Although it retains the unmistakable silhouette of a 1949 Willys pickup, nearly everything beneath the sheet metal has been reinvented. The original chassis has been replaced with a fully custom tube-frame engineered specifically for high-speed desert performance and long-travel suspension.

Packaging proved to be the project’s greatest engineering obstacle. The Willys body offers remarkably little interior and engine-bay space, forcing the team to rethink every component’s placement while maintaining access for maintenance and repairs. The result is an intricate network of removable panels, modular assemblies, and aerospace-inspired quick-release systems that allow major mechanical components to be serviced without dismantling the entire vehicle.

Even the hood and grille were completely re-engineered into a single assembly to improve structural integrity and maximize clearance for the sophisticated front suspension.

Supercharged LS Power Meets Race-Proven Drivetrain

Power comes from a heavily modified 422-cubic-inch LS3 V8 topped with a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger. Equipped with Frankenstein cylinder heads and operating at a conservative 8 psi of boost, the engine already produces approximately 930 hp, while remaining capable of surpassing four-digit output with additional tuning and E85 fuel.

Handling that power required an equally formidable drivetrain. A professionally built 4L80 automatic transmission with billet internals is paired with a paddle-shift system that mechanically actuates the transmission rather than relying solely on electronic controls, delivering race-car responsiveness with everyday drivability.

Power is transferred through an Atlas transfer case to front and rear differentials equipped with aggressive 5.43 gearing, while chromoly axle housings, heavy-duty driveshafts, and race-spec CV joints ensure the drivetrain can withstand extreme off-road abuse.

Aerospace Engineering Solves Packaging Challenges

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the build lies in its meticulous engineering. With virtually no unused space inside the compact Willys body, RJ Fabrication employed numerous aerospace-derived solutions rarely seen outside professional motorsport.

The cooling system utilizes Wiggins clamp connections throughout, replacing conventional hose clamps with aerospace-grade quick-connect fittings that simplify maintenance while improving reliability. Dual intercooler radiators, transmission coolers, engine oil cooling, power steering cooling, and air conditioning all occupy dedicated airflow channels carefully designed to prevent heat soak.

To validate these systems, the team performed extensive airflow testing using yarn tuft analysis, smoke visualization, and improvised wind-tunnel simulations by towing the truck behind a trailer at highway speeds. This unconventional testing revealed areas of turbulent airflow that were corrected with strategically placed ducting and internal dividers, ensuring every cooling system receives clean, uninterrupted airflow.

Suspension Designed for Extreme Terrain

While the Willys presents itself as a showpiece, its suspension is built for genuine off-road competition. The independent front suspension utilizes championship-proven components from Triton Engineering, similar to those used in King of the Hammers competition vehicles, while the rear employs a fully custom four-link suspension engineered in-house.

King coilover shocks provide an impressive 22 inches of front wheel travel and 30 inches at the rear, allowing the truck to tackle demanding terrain despite its classic appearance. Adjustable trailing arms, chromoly control arms, monoball joints, and billet steering components ensure durability under the immense loads generated by high-speed desert driving.

The truck rides on forged beadlock wheels wrapped in massive 40-inch BFGoodrich tires, while six-piston racing brakes with 14-inch rotors at each corner deliver stopping power worthy of its 930-horsepower output.

Every Detail Serves a Purpose

Beyond the headline specifications, RJ Fabrication devoted extraordinary attention to functional details. Hidden storage compartments, integrated lighting systems, dual-sided fuel fillers, removable bedside panels, roll-out tool drawers, and aircraft-style access points all demonstrate an obsession with usability.

Even seemingly decorative features perform essential roles, concealing electronics, protecting suspension components, or improving maintenance access. Inside, handcrafted aluminum panels, motorsport electronics, integrated communication systems, and custom controls continue the same philosophy of blending luxury, race engineering, and craftsmanship.

An Engineering Showcase Disguised as a Vintage Pickup

Rather than simply restoring a classic truck or building another high-powered restomod, RJ Fabrication has created something far more ambitious.
