Jeep is bringing the original Civilian Jeep legacy into the modern era with the 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A, an all-new special edition inspired by the 1945 Willys CJ-2A. The 11th release in the brand’s Twelve 4 Twelve series, the JL-2A combines the Wrangler Rubicon’s Trail Rated capability with styling cues drawn directly from the Jeep that first brought four-wheel-drive capability to civilian customers.
From Military Roots to Civilian Jeep
Introduced in July 1945, the Willys CJ-2A adapted the battle-proven Willys MB for postwar civilian applications. Built in Toledo, Ohio, it established the “CJ,” or Civilian Jeep, lineage and expanded the vehicle’s role beyond military service.
The CJ-2A was engineered as a practical working vehicle for farms, ranches and industrial operations. Features such as a tailgate and rear power takeoff reflected its utilitarian mission, while larger headlights and the seven-slot grille helped establish visual elements that would become closely associated with the Jeep brand.
Its distinctive postwar color combinations also gave the rugged workhorse a degree of personality. Harvest Tan with Sunset Red wheels is particularly significant to the JL-2A, influencing the modern model’s exterior color and wheel treatment.
Rubicon Capability Meets 1945 Design
The 2027 Wrangler JL-2A is built on the Rubicon platform, preserving the modern Wrangler’s Trail Rated off-road credentials while incorporating styling details inspired by the original CJ-2A.
Gobi returns for 2027 and serves as one of the model’s signature colors, drawing inspiration from the CJ-2A’s Harvest Tan. The two-door JL-2A is offered in Gobi, while the four-door model uses ’41 as its heritage-inspired color. Bright White, Sting Gray, Ghost and Joose are also available.
The exterior receives exclusive 17-inch Joose-painted wheels, referencing the Sunset Red wheels used on early CJ-2As. They are paired with standard 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 all-terrain tires. Body-color fender flares and a three-piece hardtop give the Wrangler a cohesive appearance, while orange front and rear tow hooks provide a direct visual link between the wheels and the vehicle’s historical inspiration.
Dark Metallic Grey accents around the seven-slot grille complete the modern interpretation.
A First-of-Its-Kind Wrangler Interior
Inside, Jeep takes the heritage theme further with a Wrangler-first combination of materials and colors. The cabin combines Nappa Heritage Tan leather seats with a Nappa PUR instrument-panel mid-bolster, complemented by Bison Brown door panels, lower dashboard and center console.
Desert Orange stitching provides contrast throughout the cabin and visually echoes the exterior wheels and tow hooks. Heritage details include a satin-chrome Willys-Overland shifter medallion and HVAC vent graphics featuring a seven-slot grille on one side and a Willys silhouette on the other.
A rear swing-gate plaque reproduces artwork inspired by the original CJ-2A dashboard data plate, including agricultural and industrial imagery that reflects the vehicle’s original purpose.
Standard equipment also includes the Convenience Group, with remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and universal garage-door opener, along with a front TrailCam equipped with an integrated washer.
The 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A will open for orders in October. Its package carries an MSRP of $4,995, representing $115 more than a comparably equipped Wrangler Rubicon. More importantly, it gives the modern Wrangler one of its most direct links yet to the vehicle that established Jeep’s civilian legacy.
