Jeep Compass 4xe Showcases Electric AWD in Extreme Winter Conditions

Jeep Compass 4xe demonstrates its winter driving capabilities

Jeep is showcasing the winter-driving capabilities of its electrified SUV lineup with the release of Master the Impossible, the fourth and final installment of its Compass Capability Stories series. Filmed in Arjeplog, northern Sweden, near the Arctic Circle, the episode puts the 375-horsepower Jeep Compass 4xe through demanding snow and ice conditions to demonstrate how its electric all-wheel-drive system manages traction on slippery surfaces.

The campaign highlights Jeep’s efforts to combine its traditional off-road engineering with modern electric propulsion, showing that electrification can deliver more than efficiency and reduced emissions.

Dual-Motor Electric All-Wheel Drive

The Compass 4xe uses two electric motors to produce a combined 375 horsepower. The front motor delivers 157 kW (213 hp) and 345 Nm (254 lb-ft) of torque, while the rear motor contributes 132 kW (179 hp) and 232 Nm (171 lb-ft).

Unlike conventional mechanically connected all-wheel-drive systems, this arrangement allows electronic control of torque distribution between the axles. An advanced electric motor speed controller continuously monitors wheel slip and adjusts power delivery to maintain traction.

The system also works alongside the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability program (ESP), helping improve stability and control when grip becomes limited.

Selec-Terrain Snow Mode

A key feature demonstrated in the Arctic is Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system, which offers five driving modes: AUTO, SPORT, SAND & MUD, SNOW, and 4WD LOCK.

For icy conditions, SNOW mode limits available power to 80% of maximum output, delivering smoother acceleration and reducing excessive wheelspin. It also introduces dedicated traction-control and ESP calibrations while keeping all-wheel drive continuously engaged.

By managing torque more progressively, the system helps the Compass 4xe maintain predictable behavior on slippery roads.

Up to 606 Kilometers of Electric Range

Beyond its winter-driving credentials, Jeep claims the Compass 4xe can travel up to 606 kilometers (377 miles) on a single charge under the WLTP testing cycle. Actual range will vary depending on temperature, driving conditions, and driving style.

The final episode completes Jeep’s four-part Capability Stories campaign, which explores the vehicle’s performance across different challenging environments.

Ultimately, the Compass 4xe demonstrates how electric powertrains can introduce new possibilities for all-wheel-drive performance. By combining independently controlled motors, intelligent traction management, and dedicated terrain modes, Jeep aims to preserve its off-road identity while embracing electrification.
