OIL CHANGE INDICATOR SYSTEM – RESET
The Grand Cherokee is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. The “Oil Change Required” message will flash in the EVIC display for approximately 10 seconds after a single chime has sounded to indicate the next scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate dependent upon your personal driving style.
Unless reset, this message will continue to display each time you turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position. To turn off the message temporarily, press and release the Menu button. To reset the oil change indicator system (after performing the scheduled maintenance) perform the following procedure:
1. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position (Do not start the engine)
2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds
3. Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position
NOTES – 2013-up model years:
2013-up model year vehicles will be equipped with a new variable automatic oil change indicator system. Operating conditions such as frequent short-trips, trailer tow, extremely hot or cold ambient temperatures, or E85 fuel usage will influence when the “Change Oil” message is displayed indicating service is required. Severe operating conditions can cause the change oil message to illuminate AS EARLY AS 3,500 MILES SINCE THE LAST RESET.
ALWAYS CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL AND FILTER WHEN PROMPTED BY THE OIL CHANGE INDICATOR SYSTEM AND UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD OIL CHANGE INTERVALS EXCEED 10,000 MILES OR TWELVE MONTHS, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST (6,000 MILES/6 MO. FOR SRT VEHICLES).

WARNING: Any time the oil is drained and filled it is critical to wait 15 minutes before starting the engine. NOTE:The manufacturer strongly recommends against the addition of any additives (other than leak detection dyes) to the engine oil. Engine oil is an engineered product and its performance may be impaired by supplemental additives. NOTE: It may take 30 minutes or longer for the engine oil in the oil filter housing to completely drain back into the engine. The oil will only drain back into the engine through the oil pump gears. When servicing the oil filter, vehicle maintenance personnel need to be made aware that the residual oil in the housing may spill from the housing when the new filter is installed. To prevent residual oil in the housing from spilling when the new filter is installed either use a suction gun to remove any residual oil left in the housing or wait about 30 minutes allow the oil to drain back into the engine. NOTE: Based on engine operating conditions, the oil change indicator message will illuminate. This means that service is required for your vehicle. FLUID CAUTION:
FLUID ADDITIVES:DaimlerChrysler strongly recommends against the addition of any fluids to the transmission, other than those automatic transmission fluids listed above. Exceptions to this policy are the use of special dyes to aid in detecting fluid leaks. Various “special” additives and supplements exist that claim to improve shift feel and/or quality. These additives and others also claim to improve converter clutch operation and inhibit overheating, oxidation, varnish, and sludge. These claims have not been supported to the satisfaction of DaimlerChrysler and these additives must not be used. The use of transmission “sealers” should also be avoided, since they may adversely affect the integrity of transmission seals. |
FILTER SEAL CAUTION (545RFE):The primary oil filter seal MUST be fully installed flush against the oil pump body. DO NOT install the seal onto the filter neck and attempt to install the filter and seal as an assembly. Damage to the transmission will result. Install the new primary oil filter seal in the oil pump inlet bore. Seat the seal in the bore with the butt end of a hammer, or other suitable tool. Place replacement filter in position on valve body and into the oil pump. Install screw to hold filter to valve body. Tighten screw to 40 in. lbs. torque.

CHECKING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL:NOTE: If equipped with a dipstick, use the following procedure. If your vehicle has a capped dipstick tube, it is sealed and should not be tampered with. Your authorized dealer has the proper tools to ensure that the fluid level is set properly.Check the fluid level while the transmission is at normal operating temperature. This occurs after at least 15 miles (25 km) of driving. At normal operating temperature the fluid cannot be held comfortably between the fingertips. To check the automatic transmission fluid level properly, the following procedure must be used:1. Operate the engine at idle speed and normal operating temperature. 2. The vehicle must be on level ground. 3. Fully apply the parking brake and press the brake pedal. 4. Place the gear selector momentarily in each gear position ending with the lever in P (Park). 5. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and reinsert it until seated. 6. Remove the dipstick again and note the fluid level on both sides. The fluid level should he between the “HOT” (upper) reference holes on the dipstick at normal operating temperature. The fluid level is only valid if there is a solid coating of oil is seen on both sides of the dipstick. If the fluid is low, add as required into the dipstick tube. Do not overfill. After adding any quantity of oil through the oil fill tube, wait a minimum of two (2) minutes for the oil to fully drain into the transmission before rechecking the fluid level.NOTE: If it is necessary to check the transmission below the operating temperature, the fluid level should be between the two COLD (lower) holes on the dipstick with the fluid at approximately 70 F (21 C) (room temperature). If the fluid level is correctly established at room temperature, it should be between the “HOT” (upper) reference holes when the transmission reaches 180°F (82°C). Remember it is best to check the level at the normal operating temperature.CAUTION! Be aware that if the fluid temperature is below 50°F (10°C) it may not register on the dipstick. Do not add fluid until the temperature is elevated enough to produce an accurate reading.7. Check for leaks. Release parking brake. To prevent dirt and water from entering the transmission after checking or replenishing fluid, make certain that the dipstick cap is properly resealed. It is normal for the dipstick cap to spring back slightly from its fully seated position, as long as its seat remains engaged in the dipstick tube |

Cooling systemCAUTION: You or others can be badly burned by hot engine coolant/anti-freeze or steam from your radiator. If you see or hear steam coming from under the hood, don’t open the hood until the radiator has had time to cool. Never try to open a cooling system pressure cap when the radiator or coolant bottle is hot.Engine Coolant Checks Check engine coolant/anti-freeze protection every 12 months (before the onset of freezing weather, where applicable). If engine coolant/anti-freeze is dirty or rusty in appearance, the system should be drained, flushed and refilled with fresh engine coolant/anti-freeze. |

Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 5-year/100,000 mile formula The use of aluminum cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, and water pumps requires special corrosion protection. Mopar® Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769), or the equivalent ethylene-glycol base coolant with organic corrosion inhibitors (called HOAT, for Hybrid Organic Additive Technology) is recommended. This coolant offers the best engine cooling without corrosion when mixed with 50% ethylene-glycol and 50% distilled water to obtain a freeze point of -37°C (-35°F). If it loses color (red/orange) or becomes contaminated, drain, flush, and replace with fresh properly mixed coolant solution. Notes and cautions: The recommended mixture is 50/50 ethylene-glycol and water. Never use pure antifreeze. Avoid non-HOAT mixtures, such as Prestone 50/50, that claim they can be used in vehicles of “all makes, all models”. Antifreeze mixture must always be at least 44%, all climates year round. Maximum protection (-90d) is provided with a 68% mixture protection. Do not change the thermostat for summer or winter operation. If replacement is ever necessary, install ONLY the correct type thermostat. Other designs may result in unsatisfactory cooling performance, poor gas mileage, and increased emissions. CAUTION: Use of Propylene-Glycol based coolants is not recommended, as they provide less freeze protection and less corrosion protection. CAUTION: Mopar® Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769) may not be mixed with any other type of antifreeze. Mixing of coolants other than specified (non-HOAT or other HOAT), may result in engine damage that may not be covered under the new vehicle warranty, and decreased corrosion protection. CAUTION: Do not use coolant additives that are claimed to improve engine cooling.
Chrysler Corporation LLC. has released a new engine coolant for 2013 model year vehicles and beyond. Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant 10-year/150,000 mile formula The use of aluminum cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, and water pumps requires special corrosion protection. Mopar® Antifreeze/Coolant, or the equivalent ethylene-glycol base coolant with organic corrosion inhibitors (called OAT, for Organic Additive Technology) is recommended. This coolant offers the best engine cooling without corrosion when mixed with 50% ethylene-glycol and 50% distilled water to obtain a freeze point of -37°C (-35°F). If it loses color or becomes contaminated, drain, flush, and replace with fresh properly mixed coolant solution. Notes and cautions: The recommended mixture is 50/50 ethylene-glycol and water. Never use pure antifreeze. Do not change the thermostat for summer or winter operation. If replacement is ever necessary, install ONLY the correct type thermostat. Other designs may result in unsatisfactory cooling performance, poor gas mileage, and increased emissions. OAT coolant is purple in color. It cannot be mixed with other types of coolant including Chrysler’s existing HOAT coolant and only should only be mixed with approved OAT coolant of the same color. Maintenance of the cooling system is not required unless a repair has been made with loss of coolant or the coolant has been contaminated. CAUTION: Mixing of engine coolant (antifreeze) other than specified Organic Additive Technology (OAT) engine coolant (antifreeze), may result in engine damage and may decrease corrosion protection. Organic Additive Technology (OAT) engine coolant is different and should not be mixed with Hybrid Organic Additive Technology (HOAT) engine coolant (antifreeze). If a non-OAT engine coolant (antifreeze) is introduced into the cooling system in an emergency, it should be replaced with the specified engine coolant (antifreeze) as soon as possible. CAUTION: Do not use coolant additives that are claimed to improve engine cooling.

Fuel | Tank size (all models):24.6 gallons | Diesel fuel:3.0L V6 CRD
Use good quality diesel fuel from a reputable supplier in your vehicle. The manufacturer requires that you must fuel this vehicle with Ultra Low Sulfur Highway Diesel fuel (15 ppm Sulfur maximum) and prohibits the use of Low Sulfur Highway Diesel fuel (500 ppm Sulfur maximum) to avoid damage to the emissions control system. For most year-round service, No. 2 diesel fuel meeting ASTM specification D-975 Grade S15 will provide good performance. If the vehicle is exposed to extreme cold (below 20F or -7C), or is required to operate at colder-than-normal conditions for prolonged periods, use climatized No. 2 diesel fuel or dilute the No. 2 diesel fuel with 50% No. 1 diesel fuel. This will provide better protection from fuel gelling or wax-plugging of the fuel filters. This vehicle is fully compatible with biodiesel blends up to 5% biodiesel meeting ASTM specification D-975. Gasoline: 3.6L, 5.7L, 6.2L and 6.4L NOTE: DO NOT use gasolines containing Methanol or E85 Ethanol. Use of these blends may result in starting and driveability problems and may damage critical fuel system components.
87 octane Regular unleaded 89 octane Mid-grade unleaded
91 octane (or higher) Premium (R+M)/2 recommended NOTE: The use of Premium gasoline is NOT recommended for the 3.6L or 5.7L engines. Under normal conditions, the use of Premium gasoline will not provide a benefit over high quality Regular and Mid-grade gasoline, and in some circumstances may result in poorer performance. |

Spark plugs | 3.6 V6 Pentastar (2011-up) Mopar p/n SP149125AD (Champion RER8ZWYCB4) (.043 gap, 6 plugs, tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (+/-2) (17.5 N·m)WARNING: 12mm SPARK PLUGS MUST NOT BE OVER-TORQUED. The 3.6L Pentastar engine is the first Chrysler engine to use 12mm spark plugs. With the introduction of this smaller spark plug is a concern that can occur usually not seen with larger 14mm plugs. When the smaller 12mm spark plugs are over-torqued, the metal shell stretches, resulting in improper heat transfer from the ceramic through the shell. This in turn can cause engine damage, due to pre-ignition. With a torque wrench, tighten the 12mm spark plugs to 13 ft. lbs. (17.5 N·m).5.7 V8 Hemi (2011-2013) Mopar p/n 05149177AB (NGK Yttrium ZFR5C-11) (.043 gap, 16 plugs, tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (+/-2) (18 N·m, +/-3). (Torque critical tapered design.
